Matching and Price Competition: Comment

چکیده

We relax the assumption of symmetric linear costs in B&L’s (2006) “Matching and Price Competition” and compare the pricing equilibrium that results to the firmoptimal competitive equilibrium. With linear and asymmetric costs, competition may not be localized in the pricing equilibrium, but all other qualitative comparisons of B&L (2006) hold. With non-linear and symmetric costs workers’ average utility in the pricing equilibrium may be higher than in the firm-optimal competitive equilibrium. With asymmetric and non-linear costs, firms need not choose scores from an interval in a pricing equilibrium, which may make competition even less localized.

Matching and price competition: beyond symmetric linear costs

Bulow and Levin’s (2006) “Matching and Price Competition” studies a matching model in which hospitals compete for interns by offering wages. We relax the assumption of symmetric linear costs and compare the pricing equilibrium that results to the firm-optimal competitive equilibrium. With linear and asymmetric costs, competition in the pricing equilibrium may not be localized, but all other qua...

Optimisation of Healthcare Contracts: Tensions Between Standardisation and Innovation; Comment on “Competition in Healthcare: Good, Bad or Ugly?”

An important determinant of health system performance is contracting. Providers often respond to financial incentives, despite the ethical underpinnings of medicine, and payers can craft contracts to influence performance. Yet contracting is highly imperfect in both single-payer and multi-payer health systems. Arguably, in a competitive, multi-payer environment, contractual innovation may occur...

Research Note: Consumer Heterogeneity and Competitive Price-Matching Guarantees

Price-matching guarantees are widely used in consumer and industrial markets. Previous studies argue that they are a marketing tactic that facilitates implicit price collusion. This is because once a store adopts this marketing tactic, its rivals can no longer steal its customers by undercutting its price, and hence they have little incentive to initiate price cuts. While a store with price-mat...

Thickness and Competition in Ride-sharing Markets

We study the effects of thickness and competition on the equilibria of ride-sharing markets, in which price-setting firms provide platforms to match customers (“riders”) and workers (“drivers”). To study thickness, we vary the number of potential workers (“the labor pool”) and, to study competition, we change the number of firms from one to two. When the market is sufficiently thick, wage and w...
